Extending Hotel Linen Life Through Smarter Laundry

Neatly folded white linen in a modern professional hotel laundry

Hotel linen is designed for repeated use, but unnecessary heat, poor sorting and excessive chemistry can shorten its life. A disciplined laundry process protects both the guest presentation and the property’s purchasing budget.

Sort before the wash

Separate sheets, towels and heavily soiled items. Different constructions hold water and release soil at different rates, so mixed loads can wash unevenly. Keep sharp objects, damaged zips and coloured textiles away from white linen. Treat stains promptly using the correct process rather than increasing chemistry for an entire load.

Control chemistry and temperature

Detergent, alkali, bleach and sour levels should match water quality and soil level. Overdosing can weaken fibres, leave residue or create greying; underdosing may lead to repeat washing. Regularly calibrate dispensers and check final rinse pH. Follow the textile supplier’s care limits when adjusting thermal disinfection procedures.

Avoid overdrying

Excessive dryer time is a common source of fibre damage and energy waste. Dry to the correct residual moisture, unload promptly and use cool-down cycles where appropriate. Ironer speed and temperature should be balanced to finish the linen without scorching or setting stains.

Measure instead of guessing

  • Track pieces entering service and record premature failures by cause.
  • Inspect hems, stains, shrinkage and whiteness at defined intervals.
  • Calculate cost per use, not only initial purchase price.
  • Rotate stock so the same items are not repeatedly selected first.
