GSM means grams per square metre. It describes fabric weight—not quality on its own—but it is a useful starting point when comparing hotel towels. The right GSM should support the guest experience while remaining realistic for daily laundering.
Match weight to the hotel operation
Lighter towels dry faster, take up less storage space and reduce the weight of every laundry load. Heavier towels create a fuller, more indulgent hand feel, but require more water, energy and drying time. Neither choice is automatically better; the operating model matters.
- 400–500 GSM: efficient for high-turnover properties and selected pool or gym uses.
- 500–600 GSM: a versatile balance for many full-service hotels.
- 600–700 GSM: a plush option for luxury rooms and suites where drying capacity allows.
Look beyond the number
Two towels with the same GSM can perform differently. Yarn quality, pile height, loop density, border construction and finishing all influence absorbency and durability. Combed or ring-spun cotton can provide a cleaner, softer surface, while secure hems and well-designed borders help reduce distortion after repeated washes.
Evaluate the complete towel program rather than one sample. Bath sheets may use a different weight from hand towels or bath mats, and a coordinated range should still feel visually consistent.
Test under real laundry conditions
Before confirming a bulk order, wash samples using the property’s actual detergent, temperature and dryer settings. Compare weight loss, shrinkage, whiteness, edge stability and drying time over several cycles. This reveals more about long-term value than the first-touch impression alone.
